A man is facing two charges after his 10-year-old stepson accidentally shot and killed another boy while showing off his stepfather’s shotgun.
George Phillips, 51, of Kootenay, B.C., has been charged with criminal negligence causing death and careless storage of a firearm, according to RCMP. Phillips will make his first court appearance in Cranbrook Nov. 9.
‘There’s only losers in this situation.’—Cpl. Chris Faulkner, Cranbrook RCMP
No charges will be laid against the 10-year-old boy. Under the Criminal Code of Canada, children under the age of 12 cannot be charged with criminal acts.
RCMP said the boy was one of six children and teens hanging out at a house in Jaffray, B.C., on June 16.
The child was showing off his stepfather’s shotgun when it accidentally fired, hitting Michael Voth, 17, of Fernie, who was pronounced dead at the scene, said Cpl. Chris Faulkner.

First of all why does this guy have a gun in the first place. It’s a sad situation if you have to arm yourself against your neighbours and how did his 10 year old kid know where to find it? Moral of the story: If you have guns and kids at the same time…make sure you store your guns unloaded or at least in a safe place where your kids can’t get to them.
