Why Do The Winnipeg Jets Play In The South East Division of The Eastern Confrence?

Sometimes the NHL does some pretty crazy things.  Has anyone else ever noticed this?

Check out who’s playing in the South East Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League.

1  Washington
2  Florida
3  Tampa Bay
4  Carolina
5  Winnipeg

It makes sense for the Washington Capitals, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Carolina Hurricanes to share this division as they are in the same geographical area known as the South Eastern United States.  However, The Winnipeg Jets are located in Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada.  Canada is that country above the United States for those of you who don’t know.  Manitoba is located above Minnesota and North Dakota.  Therefore, the Jets are playing in a city that is much farther north and west than their other South Eastern Division rivals.  Winnipeg is west of Detroit and the Red Wings are a Western Conference team.  So with that said it doesn’t even make sense for Winnipeg to be playing in the Eastern Conference at all from a geographical point of view.  I don’t know, it just seems weird, but I guess it’s working.
