Book Review: Friends, Lovers, And The Big Terrible Thing
- Matthew Perry was one of my favourite actors, so I thought it would be fun to read this eventually.
- I still think it’s a good read.
- He sure found lots of ways to get into trouble.
- I’ve never had my colon explode on me, but now I know it’s unpleasant without having to go through it myself.
- I never realized the drugs were that bad to him. He put a lot of detail into those parts.
- I’d be mad at Pierre Elliott Trudeau too if he took my mom away. Fortunately we’re both too young for that.
- He has an interesting relationship with God where he expects God to come through on whatever deal he makes.
- I would have never guessed he felt so alone.
- Most people get famous and don’t want to be. Matthew really really wanted to be famous the whole time.
- He found all kinds of ways to get into trouble, even when he had no money.
- Friends was so massive that once it got into the Top 5 Shows it didn’t leave for 10 years.
- I always thought it was good, but that point really drives it home.
- Matthew just wanted to make poeple laugh. If that didn’t happen, the pressure ramped up to unhealthy levels.
- He shouldn’t have beat himself up so much. It was a great show.
- The book is written as if he were sitting there telling your the story out loud. Right down to the curse words.
- Being famous made him have to put up with a lot of junk from regular people…that he WAS warned about.
- He really loved Julia Roberts.
- Fame wasn’t filling the void like he wanted it to.
- Never would have guessed his brain wanted him to kill himself.
- I totally missed out on “Go On” and “Studio 60.”
- I thought his version of the Odd Couple was pretty good. There were different writers, so you were never going to have the exact same thing.
- Wouldn’t have guessed he was high during that.
- That play he did in London sounds interesting.
- I feel like God is way more than light. That’s just me though.
- It’s cool that he was able to help people who were going through the same things he was going through.
- He has all this and just wants a normal life. He wants to settle down, get married, and have kids later on in the book after fearing that he’s not enough.
- Who hosts a pajama party for adults?
- Dating two women at the same time doesn’t seem like it would go well.
- I have no experience in any of this, by the way.
- I know it wouldn’t work. One ended up screaming at him.
- Matty, alternatively, you don’t have to break up with people when it’s going well.
- He’ll never read this. What am I doing?
- It makes me sad that he felt suicidal. It’s not him, it’s the drugs. If he had his way he wouldn’t be thinking those things.
- He tanned his arms for a date with Cameron Diaz so that his muscles would look bigger?
- Cameron Diaz got stoned and punched him in the face over pictionary.
- This is why I stay away from…everything.
- We both agree that Fletch was a great movie.
- Matthew Perry accidentally nailed Chevy Chase with a tennis ball in a place God only intended to be treated nicely.
- To add to the many reasons to stay the course, it turns out Matthew Perry thinks all non-alcoholics (Me included) are lucky.
- His drinking messed up the careers of other actors because Service Sara was not as good as it could have been. The slurred version might have been interesting but probably sad.
- I wouldn’t have guessed he was a narcissistic person.
- It’s good that near the end of this book he really wants to get sober from everything.
- In the end Matthew Perry still wants to help others.
- And then he loops around to his exploding colon…right where the book started.
- All the shows he did were an effort to keep his mom’s attention.
- Very sad read.
- His life none the less.
- All of his attempts to feel good were only temporary. He took so many risks.
- He does get better in the end. Hypnosis apparrently.
- How do you lose all your teeth from toast and peanut butter?
- Seventeen days of pain makes sense.
- I don’t know how frozen grapes and cigarettes are the same.
- Everything turns out ok.
- Except he’s dead now.
- But he finished the book before that.
