Team USA won gold in both men and women’s hockey. This is the good and right thing for the sport. Canada has 
been known for having the best hockey players in the world, but it is time to give that distinction up. Except for World Juniors.
“What kind of a statement is that?” “Aren’t you Canadian?” Yes. “Didn’t you want your Canadian teams to do well in the Olympics?” Yes. “Why would you be so mean?”
In these trying times, America needs as many wins as it can get, in all areas of life if possible. Conquering things is what they do best. The more America wins, the more they can turn inward and focus on themselves. This allows other countries to be themselves again too, without worrying about what might happen in the uncertain days to come. Now after these Winter Olympics, they can say without dispute that the best hockey players in the world belong to the United States of America. To go along with their other bests.
- They have the largest military.
- The best universities
- The strongest currency
- They are expected to be number one in every industry.
- Anything less is failure.
- Best infrastructure for anything.
- More population.
- More affordable products.
- and so much more that I can’t even think of, because I don’t live there.
Why is this good?
NHL Brass is happier when America wins. Canada is better at accepting grace in defeat.
Americans own all of television. The more they win at hockey. A Canadian team has not won the Stanley Cup since the Montreal Canadiens achieved Hockey’s highest honour in 1993. American Teams winning Stanley Cups and now Olympic Gold medals means that more money gets invested in Hockey. American money is more valuable than Canadian money and can accomplish much more when it is invested in Hockey for both countries.
The more Americans that can be glued to TV during games the better. They will pay attention when their own countrymen and women are the best. The more they watch, the better it is for Canada as well.
Another good thing for Canada is that they can finally get rid of this incessent need to be the best at hockey. Now and we are squarely number two. Canada can focus on what’s important, being the best hockey players they can be, without having the spotlight on them. Canadians are at their best when we are ignored and allowed to do our own thing in peace. If the world focuses on America having the best hockey players for a while, perhaps Canada will be able to have the tranquility of ignorance from the rest of the world that could be needed to develop the next Stanley Cup, or Gold Medal run.
Does that mean I never want Canada to win again?
No. Of course I want us to win again in the NHL and Olympics, but now is not the right time. The sooner we accept that the quicker we can get into proper shape for when it is time to win again.
