TMH Chapter 38: The Gift Of Singleness

A person could read countless articles to find out whether they have the “Gift” of singleness or not.  However, the truth it seems is much more straightforward than having to read all those articles and and waste all that time.

I know I have the gift of singleness because I’m not married yet.

If I ever get married, then that means I would have the equally good gift of marriage.  It would be really obvious to people.  There would have been a party.  It would have been good times.  It could still happen, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.  I’m totally for marriages.  I want everyone who has one to be able to have a healthy one.

It doesn’t have to be complicated.

I remember several years ago when my Church Bible Study group was doing a study on Spiritual Gifts, there was a section where other people could write down for you the gifts they see in you.  Both my parents said I have the gift of Singleness.

I disagreed at the time.  I never, and still don’t, feel particularly good at it.  Who want’s to be alone forever only to die in   However, God doesn’t always give you gifts because you are good at one thing or antother.

Simple Things to Remember

  • Singleness and Marriage are both equally good and wonderful.   This is not an Incel post.
  • Most people are born alone.  Unless, you’re like me and have a twin.
  • I will die alone.
  • There is nowhere in the Bible that says marriage is promised to anyone.
  • In Heaven, nobody is married anymore, because Christ marries the whole Church.  It looks completely different form earthly marriages.
  • There are less distractions in singleness, if you’re following Jesus, but it doesn’t mean that you won’t be distracted.

My Specific Gift Of Singleness Is For God AND for Others NOT ME

  • My friends around me need my help in all kinds of ways, and I can be less distracted and pay attention to that.
  • I can be more available to listen.
  • I can give time and resources generously.
  • The work of the Church is important whether you’re single or married.  If you’re single you can help more.
  • Just because I’m single, doesn’t mean I get to sleep around and take advantage of women…or anyone else for that matter.  Taking advantage of people is stupid.

Benefits of My Singleness That Seem Selfish But Affect Others Positively

  • It’s easier to move a single bed around than a king sized one.
  • There’s no guarantee that if I did get married and have children that my kids would even like me.  This saves the whole potential group that frustration.
  • I don’t have to worry about leaving my fictitious wife cold when I hog all the blankets.
  • The more time I’m single, the less time there is to get divorced.  Marriage is supposed to be life long, and I do believe that.  If I was to be married, it would be a forever thing.  However, it is easy for people to get distracted or grow cold, Christian or not.
  • Divorce is sad and expensive.  I’m saving someone from wanting to do that to me later.
  • By staying single, I allow one more woman to conquer a world of her own without being held back by me and my overthinking of every situation.
  • I’m obnoxious.  For the sake of any woman, it’s best I keep that to myself.
  • My hobbies can be done alone.  Even though it would be fun to share them too.
  • More time for friends if they need me.  It’s alright if they don’t too.
  • I have a disability.  That’s always going to be in the back of the mind of whoever she would be.  “I definitely could have done better.”  “Too bad he’s not like so and so.”  I want to be able to come through.  This saves a lady from having to find out the hard way if I can.
  • I’m probably bad at sex.  I don’t know.  I’ve never tried, so I wouldn’t have feedback.  Being bad at sex leads to divorce these days.  Christian or not.  Nothing good can come of that as I’ve said earlier.  I wish it wasn’t that way, but  again, knowing this is saving some woman the pain and disappointment of unmet expectations.  Nobody owes me anything, but I do owe them that warning.
  • I probably won’t be able to retire ever anyway.  That would be disappointing for a woman.
  • I have more time to read my Bible, to write about it, and talk about it with my friends.   This benefits everyone no matter who they are.  Also me, because I can be closer to Jesus.  Whether single or married, as a Christian, that’s the whole point.
