Kory was glad that the day didn’t seem to take too long to work its way through to evening. He returned to his unremarkable, yet clean, apartment. Sure, he could have dialed the ridiculously long phone number at any time on his cellphone. This isn’t the 1990s where he had to wait til he could find a land line or pay phone. We’ve quite obviously advanced past that as a society in general.
Kory wanted old fashioned privacy, and you are never guaranteed that in a subway station. The opposite is more likely true.
He dialed the long number perfectly on the first try, then he waited for someone to pick up.
“Welcome to WRAITH Spy Agencey: Blend In, Break Out, Be Better. How can I help you, Kory?” The voice said.
“How do you know I’m Kory?” Kory asked.
“We crossed paths at the subway.” The voice explained.
“Oh! You’re the hooded figure.” Kory said in realization.
“Yep.” said the figure.
“So, what would you want with me?” Kory asked. “You’d think a spy agency would have a more secure method of contact than mobile phones. What about wire taps?”
“Nobody’s going to wire tap you!” The figure laughed. “You’re boring, predictable, and do what you’re told. This is exactly the kind of person we need working for us.” The voice explained.
“Are you sure you don’t want anyone more flashy?” Kory asked.
“Absolutely!” The voice reiterated. “Those kind of people are a pain in the butt to manage!”
“Interesting.” Kory said. “It’s as if everything I’ve read in spy novels is all wrong.”
“Yep.” The figure said. “So, are you in? Your life will basically change immediately. Also, we will pay you much better than that paltry salary you are getting now.”
“How do you know about my…” Kory trailed off.
“We’re a spy agency, remember?” The figure reaffirmed. “So, again, are you in?”
“Yes!” Kory exclaimed.
“Good.” The figure said. “That’ll make it a lot less awkward for you work-wise since I already left your signed resignation letter with your now former employer.”
How did you? …” “Kory mumbled.
“Spy agency.” The figure said. “It’s time for immediate change.”
Suddenly the room was filled with light. Kory felt uncomfortable as he felt his entire body squeezing into the mouthpiece of his little cellphone. He couldn’t understand what was happening. He couldn’t ask. All he could do was hope he made it out to the other side of whatever this was.
He waited in extreme pain. Like Ant Man shrinkng into the quantum realm. Only he wasn’t Ant Man. He was just Kory. An extremely confused Kory who wanted this sensation to end.
