This is my sister’s favourite movie of all time. We watched it together with Pizza since I happened to be visiting for the long weekend.
Hiccup, played by Jay Baruchel, wants so badly to kill a dragon at first because that’s what he thinks he needs to do to get a girl. This is his only apparent life goal at the time. The only thing that is aparrent to those around Hiccup is that he is not cut out to be a viking. His father, played by Gerard Butler is basically a Norse, Scottish version of Leonidas from the movie 300. A character he also played. Both are tough as nails. Love is beneath a thick outer shell. I thought it was funny that Stoick the Vast was so worried about providing for the entire community when there were plenty of other men who wuld be under those same responsibilities to fight and provide for their own families, just like him.
The training sessions, centered on killing dragons, reminded me of the First Top Gun Movie. They had similar baptism by fire initiations. If they only knew that the dragon they feared most, and the rest of them, were not dangerous at all. There was a bigger thing they were all collectively trying to get away from.
In the process of all this, Hiccup meets a dragon that is supposed to be the most fierce one that those vikings can come across, according to their book of dragons, which is largely unhelpful. The tension between father and son reaches a boiling point with Gerard Butler disowning Jay Baruchel, only to take him back 20 minutes later after realizing that their killing of dragons was unnecessary (except for the one big one) and unhelpful to the group. The dragons wouldn’t defend themselves against the humans if they didn’t have to. Hiccup does get the girl in the end, even though they spent most of the movie not getting along.
- Why is getting the girl the ultimate goal?
- It’s interesting that they made America Ferrera’s character, Astrid, a blonde, when she is clearly a brunette. Not just in this movie, but for Super Store, and other roles.
See what I mean?
- Would Hiccup not have gone for Astrid if she was a brunette. We’ll never know.
- I don’t fully understand the heavy analysis this film gets for the sake of theraputic value.
- I know I had a good time watching it.
- Even if I did fall asleep for a few seconds here and there.
- I fall asleep during all movies these days though.
- Doesn’t even matter where I am.
- At home.
- Visiting.
- Anywhere!
- It was a good use of time.
