Hungry For Violence? Why?

I watched the movie “The Hunger Games” with my family last night in theaters.  It’s supposed to be the most anticipated movie of the year.  This is the first in a series of movies that will come out based on the books by Suzanne Collins.  It is set in the future.  Twelve districts as they call them must select a man and woman from each district to go into an arena and fight to the death until there is one winner. Meanwhile everyone else is calmly watching this on TV. I won’t spoil any more of the plot for you.  My question is this.  There was peace in those 12 districts.  Why would they go ahead and make war games?  For honour?  What kind of honour comes from killing people?  and why are people so engrossed in watching the killing are they that bored?  Why do we supposedly enjoy this sort of thing.  Roman gladiators stopped fighting long ago, and public executions are a thing of the past more or less.  What is the thrill of watching people fight to their death?
