When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose.
Who are the Sons of God in this case. Obviously, this passage is not speaking of Jesus. This is not something He would have done, even though He is God’s one and only Son. One option is that the Sons of God were fallen angels, while a second option states that the Sons of God could be the physical human sons of Seth. However, scripture seems to lean toward the idea that the Sons of God in this case were fallen angels, in a similar situation to Satan. So, at one point they would have been on God’s side, but now they want nothing to do with Him. Not paying any attention at all.
3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”
God can lay down the law whenever He wants. It’s a warning to us as much as them.
4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.
Who are the Nephilium? Numbers 13:33 states that they were giants that put fear into regular sized men. Picking up from verse 31 for context:
31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.” 32 And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. 33 We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”
Nobody wanted to mess with these guys. Once we get around to Numbers, we’ll hear more about how that story ends.
5 The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. 6 The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled.
Even though He knew this would happen. God experiences all emotions.
7 So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
God’s never gives up.
