My Favourite Kyle Busch Memory

This is not a “How I Became A Fan” story.  That’s more like “Kurt’s good at racing.  May as well go for the little brother too.”

Also, as impressive as it is to win a championship after breaking both legs, and missing a third of the races in 2015, that’s not the story I’m going to talk about either.

In 2011, on a late September Saturday afternoon at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, my dad, my grandpa (known amongst our immediate family and always as Papa), and me, were attending what would be our first ever race.  We had tickets to everything that was happening that weekend.  The Camping World Truck Series race, which was that day, and the Sprint Cup Series race which was Sunday afternoon.

We were wandering around the places where they let fans go.  Qualifying for the Trucks was happening.  We make our way right down next to the fence to watch  a few laps.  (You didn’t have to be in your seats for that part).  We go over to one of the turns where the cars would be slowest.  Dad gets his camera ready.  Kyle Busch is just about to come out and do his two laps of qualifying to see where he would start the race.  Fastest gets to start out front.  What we are attempting to do is take a picture as he goes by me in the background.  We will have two opportunities, and beore you get excited, the picture below is from the internet.

I lean on the catch fence in my Kurt Busch 2 Miller Lite hat and my Kyle Busch M&Ms T Shirt.  You’re not supposed to lean on those fences,  but I didn’t know at the time, and the security guard who was watching us decided not to arrest me.  Thanks for that.  If I had known I wouldn’t have done that.

The first time Kyle goes by us, even at corner speed we can’t get the photo.  The catch fence moves back and forth and I lose my balance, and also almost lose my Kurt Busch hat.  I still have all of them now.  (This was all because of the wind coming off the spoiler in my general direction.  Sorry to bore you with aerodynamics.)    We get ready again for his second lap.  Same result, except I was bracing myself better.  He was too fast for us.  He was too fast for everyone that day.  Kyle started out front and stayed there.  I never actually met him, but that was close enough.

Here is the Lap 1 attempt.

Followed by Lap 2.

Sure, all of the stats are impressive.  See? …

Thanks, Wikipedia.

…but that story is fun to remember, and nobody knows it except for three other people.

It’s cool that we all got to share that together….even the random security guard.
