“You need to eat lots of grass to keep your strength up.” Mom said. “A deer is only as good as the speed at which he can run.”
Darnell chomped and chomped on grass while also drinking water from a nearby stream. After a while, Darnell felt immense pressure in his body. He didn’t know why. This had never happened before since it was his first time eating. Suddenly a rush of liquid expelled from him, followed from a more satisfying than expected plop.
None of it smelled very good, so Darnell ran off into the meadow by himself, leaving his mother to tend to his evil deed. His first act of rebellion. Doing something completely natural. She screamed. “Don’t be late for supper.”
He was tired of eating grass anyway. Running was more interesting to him now. Specifically running into fresh air.
Soon he ran into two other deer who looked to be ablout his age.
“Hey, you are new!” Strange deer number one said. “I’m Michael.”
“I’m James,” the other deer said.
“Your moms weren’t very imaginative when they named you, were they?” Darnell asked.
“Why? What’s your name?” Michael asked.
“Darnell.” Darnell said.
“What’s that supposed to be?” James asked.
“I don’t even know.” Darnell said. “Do you folks want to be friends with me, and run to the edge of this meddow to see what comes next?”
“Yes, absolutely!” They said in unison.
The three deer took off. New found friendship and an adventure. What could be better? Darnell just had to see what those shadows were on the edge of the meadow. They ran together, and surprisingly, nobody tried to shoot them. Yet.
