Officials of the Marin County Sheriff’s Department have shared details of Robin Williams’ suicide. Authorities believe that the actor and comedian hanged himself with a belt in the bedroom of his home in Tiburon, California, near San Francisco. Williams also had superficial cuts on his wrist and police found a pocketknife near him, according to The Associated Press. His personal assistant found Williams’ body.
Lieutenant Keith Boyd reported that Williams had been seeking treatment for depression, but did not say whether or not the actor left a suicide note. Boyd said that they had done a toxicology report, but that the results won’t come in for weeks. In the interim, the authorities will continue to investigate Williams’ death.
Williams’ wife, Susan Schneider, said she had seen him last on the night before his death. When she left the house the next day, she thought he was still asleep. His personal assistant arrived later and grew worried when no one came to the door after knocking.
AP reports that after years of periodic bouts with depression and substance abuse, Williams had returned to a 12-step program last month.
“I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings,” Schneider said in a statement in the hours after Williams’ death was announced. “I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. [We] hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”
Chevy Chase, Danny DeVito, Meryl Streep and President Barack Obama were just a few of many tributes and remembrances that came in after the actor’s death. “Hard to speak. Hard to say. Hard to take,” wrote DeVito in a statement. “All I can think about is what a joy he was to be with. I’m devastated.”
