The trio ran on and on.
“Do you think we can go faster if we fart?” Michael asked.
“Are you serious?” James asked right back.
“Only one way to find out.” Darnell said.
Needless to say, they stank up the place, even though there was so much open air. They didn’t actually go faster, but a bond was strengthened that day. A bond of silly antics.
Michael noticed something long and shiny in the distance. “Let’s got chenck out that long shiny thing in the distance!” He exclaimed.
Not wishing to be outdone by Michael and subsequently forgotten about in this story, Darnell raced him hard toward the goal, getting there first. James trotted along in the rear. He clearly didn’t care if he was forgotten in the story. Yet, he remained.
Upon reaching the magnificent shiny thing, Michael asked an important question.”Can we eat it?”
Without waiting for an answer, he chomped down. His teeth felt all tingly. Who among us has never accidentally bitten down on a fork while eating? It was like that, but longer lasting.
“Yeah, I don’t want to eat this anymore.” Michael said.
“You’re a dork.” Darnell replied.
James finally showed up. “What did I miss?” He asked.
“Our boy Michael here was clearly being an idiot” Darnell said. “We’re also trying to figure out what this new expanse is in front of us.
It was like a river. Instead of blue water, it was grey. The fish in this river were much more organized than usual, the were large, shiny, and traveled at incredible speeds. The three deer were mesmerized by the sight, and the feel of the wind off these large, fast fish.
Suddenly, a small, angry, outspoken rabbed snapped them out of it.
“Gentlemen, you are in my way!” The small, angry rabbit exclaimed.
Seizing a chance to assert himself as leader of the group, Darnell stepped up to the rabbit and screamed, “who the flip do you think you are assuming we are gentlemen! We are tough, hardened deer!”
“Do you talk to your mommy with that mouth?” The rabbit asked.
“My mamma said I had to be tough immediately.” Darnell said. He took his hoof and punted the rabbit over the shiny thing in an effort to both get rid of him and help him toward his goal.
The rabbit ran across the grey mass which did not part for him like water. The trio watched him cross the long narrow island of grass in the middle and start on the second grey part. They also watched as a large fish phowed into him instead of going around like they would expect. The rabbit lay there motionless, mere feet from the next shiny thing. This was the first death of another animal that these deer had ever witnessed. It was shocking and quick. They didn’t even get to know his name. Even though he was annoying, they found that point of truth sad.
“Well, boys, what shall we do?’ Darnell asked. “These fish will kill animals indiscriminately, and we don’t know why.”
Michael bopped over the shiny thing and said, “we just have to run faster than him.”
So they did. Mercifully, they all made it across. Even James.
“This shiny thing looks the same as the other one.” Darnell declared. Staring into the setting sun, the trio jumped the second barrier and immediately rolled down a long hill.
In the gathering darkness, they saw many bright lights in the distance. Lights that clearly needed to be explored. After eating some low quality grass in the field next to the gravelly hill, they ran toward them. They were running toward more adventure.
