“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.” (Exodus 20:7)
This is a huge one in today’s society. So huge we barely notice it. In Biblical times God’s name was to be used in reverence and with respect. Now people just say it to be cool or when they’re angry.
How do you think God feels (Yes, God has feelings) when we use His name as a swear word?
Well… How would you feel if I used your name as a swear word? You wouldn’t like it much.
And all of the different OMG and Jesus Christ things… “Gosh” still counts under this one, we all know what you wanted to say. People just say it in passing. It’s like if I said to you”Oh <your name>!” as I saw you in the hallway, you’d get all excited for a minute and then I’d keep walking. How would you feel then?
That and it sounds really stupid when you keep saying it over and over. There are other things to say. Now, to be fair, it’s not this particular generation’s fault entirely. We’re not helping, but this started back in the 1940s at least. Now it’s engrained in culture…but it doesn’t have to be.
